lol - I am not black but a friend of mine told me this - lol. When white people say your hair is NAPPY it is a preppy saying that means it looks kind of messed up - like maybe you slept on it. But to them NAPPY means something like their hair is beaded up and maybe even nasty. I am not quite sure of the meaning but apparently it does offend them in some fashion and it has to do with a beading up of hair. I am sure they will explain it better or more than I can.

actually saying one has a nappy hair can be degrading however it is what it is....and yes we are the only race that has this coil-like hair...why it goes back to our ancestors....we were out in the sun all day. Our hair was like wool to protect us from the sun. Its just a charactistic of black people....does it makes us less than the other races...I think not. However, we have become to not appreciate it for its needs alot of maintenance. The term natural hair is more appropiate, I think. For we are the only race to style our in numerous ways and it will hold for days.

Okay, this is what everyone is failing to understand. The offense did not just come from being called nappy-head. We hear it a lot, and joke about it amongst ourselves, because it may be true in few cases, I'm willing to admit. The offense came from the fact that this Imus clown directed this comment towards young, upstanding black women, who had reached a pinnacle of success in college athletics. He basically took the joy and pride out of what should have been a very happy and celebratory moment for these women. Also, the fact that he called them "ho's". It's bad enough that we as black ppl tend to demean our own with this crap, but we don't need some self-righteous, self-important, senile, dick-headed white guy to do it, too.
